Billy Martin was hired and fired as the head coach of the New York Yankees by owner George Steinbrenner five times throughout Martin's career. Despite all the hiring and firing, usually in dramatic fashion in front of TV cameras, Steinbrenner had a fondness for Martin. He even had Martin's number 1 retired at Billy Martin Day at Yankee Stadium on August 10, 1986, along with a plaque in Yankee Monument Park. Martin was a “special consultant” to Steinbrenner prior to his death on Christmas Day in 1989. Prior to his death, Steinbrenner was considering hiring Martin as manager for the sixth time.
