Sony Betamax was a consumer-based video recording device introduced in 1975. The rival VHS was introduced in 1977 by RCA. To compete with the two-hour format of VHS Sony introduced a two-hour format and RCA countered with two, four and six-hour record speeds. By 1980, VHS had controlled about 60% of the US market. In 1988 Sony conceded in defeat when the started manufacturing VHS recorders (through Hitachi). DVD's eventually replaced both formats.
