I still enjoy these Halloween treats to this day!

This Pillsbury Halloween commercial goes back to 1993, and seeing the Doughboy making those little jack-o’-lantern cookies immediately brings back that simple Halloween feeling.

What I didn’t realize is that this commercial came right around the time Pillsbury was changing the way we made these things.

Pillsbury had been selling Slice ’n Bake cookies since 1957, but in the early ’90s they came up with what they called the “cookie within a cookie” — a design actually built right into the dough.

The first Shape cookies weren’t even Halloween cookies. They were Teddy Bears and Dinosaurs. Then came the holiday designs, including Christmas Trees, Pumpkins and Ghosts.

In 2001 they got even easier. Pillsbury introduced the Ready-to-Bake version, so we didn’t even have to slice the roll anymore. Just put them on the cookie sheet and bake them.

Apparently I’m not the only one who still likes them because they’re still going strong. For Halloween 2026, Pillsbury has Pumpkin, Ghost, Spooky Cat and Sugar Skull designs.

The Doughboy himself has even more history. Poppin’ Fresh first appeared in 1965 and became so popular that within only a few years he was one of the most recognizable advertising characters in America.

More than 30 years after this commercial, I’m still eating the Halloween cookies!

Do you still buy these around Halloween?
